For folks who didn’t grow up in the '90s, Friends on NBC was a show about a bunch of mid-to-late 20-something friends in New York and the mix of mundanity and excitement that makes up their lives. Watching this show as a kid, it made me believe that living in New York was all about hanging out at your favorite coffee shop and seeing naked people from across the street in their apartment – oh, and smelly cats.
Friends was a big deal when it was airing, with the show and its various cast members winning numerous awards during its decade-long run, from 1994 to 2004. Watching the show now almost serves as a sort of time capsule of the era, with jokes and terms maybe not hitting quite as well, guest stars that have fallen out of the public eye, and the best that '90’s and early 2000s had to offer. But the heart of Friends still continues to ring true: that having a circle of dear friends will help you get through the toughest moments life throws at you, and be there to share the best. That message is timeless. The “Rachel” hairstyle, less so.
Friends was a product of its time, but as its streaming and syndication life has shown, its characters and stories still are fun to watch 30 years later. And for this price, its an easy recommendation for fans of sitcoms.
