Ghost of Yotei is finally out, and excitement around Sucker Punch’s samurai sequel inspired one fan to take their hype to the top of the game’s namesake mountain.
Famitsu editor Chemical Yoshino revealed he was so eager for the launch that he flew to Hokkaido and climbed Mount Yotei, the towering volcano that gives the PlayStation exclusive its title. Known as “Ezo Fuji” for its resemblance to Mount Fuji, the peak rises to 1,898 meters and dominates the skyline of western Hokkaido.
Yoshino detailed the journey in his Famitsu article, explaining that the trip took four days in total, including one night spent on the mountain itself. Each ascent and descent lasted around seven hours, turning his spontaneous adventure into a serious endurance test.

While many visitors admire the volcano from below, Yoshino wanted to reach its summit before stepping into the virtual version brought to life by Sucker Punch.
The climb came just as Ghost of Yotei launched worldwide on October 2. The sequel follows Ghost of Tsushima, Sucker Punch’s 2020 hit, but trades the Mongol invasions of Tsushima for a tale set centuries later in Ezo (modern Hokkaido). Mount Yotei stands at the center of that new backdrop, shaping the landscapes and mood of Atsu’s revenge story.
Mount Yotei itself is considered a challenging climb even for experienced hikers. The volcano is famous for steep trails, sudden weather shifts, and a long ascent that often takes half a day.
Locals have long compared it to Mount Fuji because of its symmetrical cone, earning it the nickname “Ezo Fuji.” Yoshino’s climb captured how the game’s fictional setting mirrors one of Japan’s most striking natural landmarks.
