Ghost of Yotei is set to shake up the Ghost of Tsushima formula in more ways than one, and the sequel’s new weapons are already a standout. From dual katanas to devastating rifles and polearms, here’s every confirmed weapon in Ghost of Yotei so far.
First revealed during September 2024’s State of Play, Ghost of Yotei follows a new protagonist named Atsu and takes place in 1603, over 300 years after Jin Sakai’s campaign in Ghost of Tsushima.
With a new era and a new setting in Hokkaido, the arsenal has been significantly expanded to reflect Japan’s changing battlefield.
Sucker Punch has now confirmed several new weapons coming to the sequel, including long-requested additions like the Naginata and Odachi, first shown during the July 2025 gameplay reveal.
All confirmed weapons in Ghost of Yotei
Katana/Dual Katana
Just like the Ghost of Tsushima himself, Atsu is shown to be proficient in the ways of the blade. However, unlike Jin, she can wield two katanas, echoing that of Miyamoto Musashi, a legendary swordsman who was renowned for double-bladed swordsmanship and undefeated duels.
During the Ghost of Yotei State of Play trailer, we see Atsu slicing and dicing enemy ronin, using a flurry of attacks to kill them. It also looks like you’ll be able to use both double and single katana fighting styles, opening up more options when taking down your foes.
Jin’s Way of the Flame mythic ability appears to be making a return as well, with one enemy shown engulfing their katana in fire. Having the ability to use incendiary oil to give your sword slices a fiery buff would certainly be welcomed, especially if you can dual-wield them.
Kusarigama
Another weapon making its debut is the Kusarigama. This deadly weapon is used by swinging the weighted chain before unleashing it towards your opponent. The Kusarigama can also disarm opponents, with the chain being used to wrap around katanas.
Atsu will use this weapon to remove a weak opponent’s weapon, leaving them open to a fatal strike from her katana. We imagine this weapon will deal less damage, but will make up for this with high speed and mobility.
Spears
As noted by Senior Communications Manager Andrew Goldfarb, Ghost of Yotei’s new setting gives devs “the opportunity to introduce new mechanics, gameplay improvements, and even new weapons.” One such weapon that is making its debut is the Spear.
This long-range weapon is perfect for poking your enemies from afar, and even has a disarming kick attack that knocks weapons out of your enemy’s hands.
Odachi
The Odachi is one of the most imposing weapons confirmed in Ghost of Yotei, and it’s built for sheer power. This oversized blade is a slower, heavier alternative to the katana, and it’s perfect for players who prefer brute force over finesse.
In gameplay footage, Atsu is seen wielding the Odachi to deliver wide, sweeping strikes that stagger enemies and break through their defenses. It’s especially effective against larger foes, allowing you to cut through their beefier armor.
While its slower sweeping attacks leave Atsu a little more vulnerable, landing blows with the Odachi can turn the tide of a fight in seconds.
Tanegashima (Matchlock Rifles)
For the first time, Tanegashima (Matchlock Rifles) will be present in Ghost of Yotei. During the State of Play, we saw Atsu aiming at an enemy, taking them down with a lethal headshot. It also appears that we’ll get access to different bullet types, with the menu on the right showing what appears to be selectable ammunition.
It’s important to note that Tanegashima were originally brought to the shores of Japan by the Portuguese Empire in 1543, and were utilized by both samurai and ashigaru (foot soldiers) in battle. So, given that Atsu’s journey takes place in 1603, we’ll likely see enemies wielding these ancient rifles.
With the game also being set in Hokkaido, we can also expect to run into some pretty fearsome predators. Everything from brown bears and wolves can be found in this region, so having something that packs a bigger punch will be useful.
Bow
While the Tanegashima may be the popular option for taking down heavily armored samurai, the bow will be the go-to stealth option. Despite the introduction of firearms, bows were still widely used during the Edo period.
The footage showed Atsu wielding both a longbow and a half-bow, so you’ll likely need to switch between these when balancing both range and power.
Shuriken
The Shuriken was a fan favorite in Ghost of Tsushima thanks to its ability to stealthily take down foes and distract nearby enemies. Jin famously used them when infiltrating enemy castles and encampments, enabling him to cut down his enemies before they could even react.
Given the first game focused on both stealth and more direct combat, it’s fair to speculate that Shurikens will make a return in Ghost of Yotei.
Blinding Powder
A staple of any stealthy shinobi’s kit is the ability to distract your enemies. Well, in this case, Atsu can conceal her attacks with the use of Blinding Powder.
Unlike regular smoke bombs that conceal a large area, Blinding Powder is for, well, blinding single-target enemies. In the State of Play footage, Atsu quickly hurls out the powder in the middle of a fight, giving her a few seconds of uninterrupted sword slashes.
This will be particularly useful as an offensive gadget, especially when you want to get in a few extra hits without any resistance.
Black powder bomb
With firearms being more widely used in Japan during Atsu’s tale, we expect the black powder bomb to make a return. These deadly explosives are particularly useful when fighting grouped enemies, killing and knocking down all those that get caught within their blast radius.
We imagine Atsu will be familiar with these explosives and will be no stranger to their destructive power.
