Amazon Web Services is facing widespread disruption, knocking major platforms offline across the United States and beyond.

The outage began around 12:40 AM PDT and has caused failures across multiple apps and services that rely on AWS’s cloud infrastructure. Gaming, messaging, financial, and smart home platforms have all been affected, with spikes in user complaints appearing on Downdetector throughout the morning.

Reports show outages impacting Fortnite, Roblox, PSN, and Nintendo Online. Even everyday services like the McDonald’s mobile app, Ring doorbells, and Alexa smart devices have been hit, leaving users unable to log in or access key features.

Major internet outage continues

AWS confirmed “increased error rates and latencies for multiple AWS services in the US-East-1 Region,” one of its most critical data hubs in Northern Virginia. Because so many major platforms depend on this region, even a short disruption can ripple worldwide.

As of 2:27 AM PDT, AWS said recovery was underway. “We are seeing significant signs of recovery. Most requests should now be succeeding. We continue to work through a backlog of queued requests. We will continue to provide additional information,” the company stated on its official Health Dashboard.

The company has yet to declare the issue fully resolved, but many affected services are gradually coming back online. Developers for titles like Fortnite and Roblox have acknowledged issues on their own status pages as systems reconnect.

This isn’t the first time AWS’s US-East-1 region has experienced major downtime. Similar outages in December 2021 and June 2023 took down major platforms, including Disney+, Slack, and even Amazon’s own services.

AWS says it will share a full post-incident report once service is fully restored, but in the meantime, users may continue to experience login issues or slow performance while backlogs are cleared.
