Toho has revealed the sequel to Takashi Yamazaki’s smash-hit Godzilla Minus One, including a title – Godzilla Minus Zero – and logo that may be hiding one of the MonsterVerse’s “best” villains.

Yamazaki achieved something special with Godzilla Minus One: a movie that’s both a monster epic and a deeply human drama, using the devastation of post-WWII Japan to turn a kaiju rampage into a story of guilt, courage, and redemption.

What’s more, the 2023 film was made on a shoestring budget compared to Hollywood’s bloated blockbusters, costing just $15 million and going on to earn $113.6 million at the global box office

Oh, and it also bagged the franchise its first Oscar. As such, there’s been plenty of anticipation for a potential follow-up, which was confirmed on Monday (November 7) with an exciting new reveal.

Godzilla Minus Zero logo may be hiding a MonsterVerse villain

When Toho revealed the new Godzilla Minus Zero logo – written as “G-0.0” – fans were quick to notice the first letter appears to be hiding the silhouette of a kaiju. And some think it could be none other than King Ghidorah.

You see, the Godzilla Minus One title’s “G” was a similarly stylized brushstroke symbol, later confirmed to feature a hidden silhouette of the titular monster’s head and body. Since the Minus Zero “G” is slightly different, it’s got fans speculating whether it contains a clue.

For the uninitiated, Ghidorah is Godzilla’s ultimate nemesis – a three-headed, golden dragon who supposedly fell from the stars, and his arrival usually signals the end of civilization as we know it.

First appearing in the 1964 movie Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster, he’s been portrayed as everything from an alien weapon of mass destruction to a cosmic god of chaos, and is often described as the “best” Godzilla villain of all time.

It would be a huge deal if he turned up in Minus Zero, and some fans think the “G” could be hiding one of his heads in the new logo. “Almost looks like a dragon, perhaps a Ghidorah head?” said one on Reddit, while another wrote, “-0? Monster Zero? Ghidorah?!”

A third added, “Looks like Ghidorah,” and a fourth chimed in, “Hear me out. Minus Zero = Ghidorah. King Ghidorah is Monster Zero after all. Makes total sense.”

However, not everyone’s convinced – and some fans don’t want to see Ghidorah full stop. One of the reasons Godzilla Minus One was so well-received is that it delivered something fresh to the franchise, avoiding the formula that’s dominated the Hollywood MonsterVerse.

As such, some don’t want Godzilla Minus Zero to recycle the same famous monsters that have already headlined countless films.

“I don’t care what it is called, as long as the villain isn’t King Ghidorah, Mothra, MechaGodzilla, or even Gigan,” said one. “Either reuse someone like Megalon or Hedorah, or make a new villain.”

Another, who agreed the logo looks like the kaiju’s head, stated, “I wonder if it might be a little early for Ghidora though. Personally I’d like to see a GMK style movie: keep Goji as the villain, maybe bring in Mothra or another ‘heroic’ monster to combat him.”

A third made the following guess: “King Ghidorah (monster zero) seems too obvious. Perhaps Mothra? The way the ‘G’ is stylized is intentional and it reads like a winged monster.”

We’ll have to wait and see when new details arrive. Although there’s no release date just yet, The Hollywood Reporter heard that Yamazaki and Toho are reportedly locking in a late-2026 global release window, with production to take place in New Zealand and Norway later this year.
