Google is training its new AI, SIMA 2, on games like Goat Simulator 3 and No Man’s Sky as it can navigate and solve problems within digital worlds.
Artificial Intelligence, AI, has become a big part of everyday life for a lot of people. It has become a fact-checking tool, it works alongside robots in car manufacturing, and has even started seeping into the music industry.
It has long been used in the gaming sphere to assist with levels and even artwork as well. AI game assistant has also become a thing too. Xbox has Microsoft’s Copilot as a gaming coach, with it being used to assist new players in Overwatch 2.
Now, Google has started to get in on the act. Their DeepMind program has developed SIMA 2 – scalable instructable multiworld agent – based on games like Goat Simulator 3 and No Man’s Sky.
Google AI is being built on Goat Simulator 3
Yes, that’s right, Google DeepMind has been demo’ing their updated AI assistant on these games, asking it to perform complex tasks while in-game.
As shown off by MIT’s Technology Review, the SIMA 2 bot has been asked to complete tasks with prompts such as ‘turn to the right’ and ‘enter the barn via the door’ in Goat Simulator 3. And it does it pretty fluidly, too.
In No Man’s Sky, the demo video shows the AI being given a prompt about liking flowers and disobeying instructions, and immediately sets off to pick some rather than working at the workbench.
The original SIMA was also trained on Goat Simulator 3 and Valheim, but the updated version can tackle bigger problems. However, as MIT’s report notes, it does “struggle” with “complex tasks that require multiple steps and more time to complete.”
Google initially noted that one of the aims for SIMA is to provide a co-op companion to players who don’t have anyone else to call upon.
The Gemini-built AI won’t be replacing human players any time soon, and it certainly won’t be able to speed run a big game for a while. Though, it is making progress.
