Games industry insider Jeff Grubb claimed in a recent podcast episode that a forthcoming God of War game set in Greece has been delayed until next year.
God of War: Ragnarok officially tied up Kratos’ loose ends in the Norse Pantheon, leaving fans wondering what mythology Santa Monica Studios will choose to tackle next.
While many players speculated that ancient Egypt was the obvious choice, it looks like developers have chosen to bring the series back to its roots in Greece.
As told by Jeff Grubb on a June 17 episode of the Last of the Nintendogs podcast, the powers that be had a vastly different vision in mind for the next game in the God of War franchise.
Next God of War “side story” game could release in 2026
Grubb says that another title in the series is already in the works, which will allegedly take Kratos back to his homeland of ancient Greece.
“We have Marathon and the new God of War Greek project, which I heard was pushed back to 2026, as well,” Grubb said, referencing Marathon’s indefinite delay amid backlash over plagiarized assets.

Rumors of this game have already been in circulation for months now. In March 2025, Grubb posted on Bluesky that he was aware of a “Greek God of War thing coming out later this year,” describing it as a “side-story project.”
And in early June, games journalist Tom Henderson spoke of a “2.5D/Metroidvania game or whatever it will be” that “seems to be much smaller in scale than what I initially thought,” to which Grubb replied with a, “Yeah” in an exchange on X.
Henderson also mentioned the game in a podcast episode in February, saying it “isn’t set in Egypt, it’s actually set in Greece and it’s gonna be a younger Kratos this time,” hinting that it would be a prequel of sorts.
Thus far, it’s uncertain why the game has been delayed, but leaks claim that the project is “basically a GOW x Blasphemous” with a “better art style than Hades.”
