A gym in northern China is making headlines after launching an extreme weight-loss challenge with a jaw-dropping prize: a Porsche Panamera.
The fitness center in Binzhou, Shandong province announced the campaign on October 23, promising the luxury car to anyone who can lose 50kg (110 pounds) within just three months. The model, reportedly a 2020 Porsche Panamera owned by the gym’s boss, is valued at roughly 1.1 million yuan (US$155,000).
According to the South China Morning Post, participants must pay a 10,000 yuan (US$1,400) registration fee, which includes meals and accommodation in a fully enclosed training facility.
Coach Wang, who spoke to Xiang Yang Video, confirmed the offer is real and already underway. “Registration will close once we reach 30 participants. So far, around seven or eight people have signed up,” he said.
Health experts warn against gym’s extreme weight loss challenge
While the challenge has gone viral across Chinese social media, health experts are warning that the target is not just unrealistic. It’s potentially life-threatening, too.
Dr. Zeng, a Weibo influencer with over 3.5 million followers, warned that losing 0.5kg a day is too much, too fast. He said such rapid weight loss can cause muscle depletion, hormonal imbalance, and even organ damage.
“Unless someone is severely overweight, this pace leads to muscle loss rather than fat reduction,” he said.
Gastrointestinal surgeon Pu Yansong echoed the concern, saying the challenge could “strain the organs” and should not be attempted without medical supervision.
“Scientific weight loss should be gradual, allowing the brain, body fat, muscles, and organs to adapt to the new energy balance.”
