The news that HBO’s Harry Potter series would be getting a narrator sparked a busy debate, but it turns out there was no need to voice any concerns, according to a new report.

Following the success of the book series, the Harry Potter big screen adaptations are among the highest-grossing movies of all time. So, when a seven-season TV show was announced back in 2023, the news was met with both excitement and anticipation.

Two years later and the HBO series is taking shape, with new child stars taking the place of Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint as Harry, Hermione, and Ron, and filming kicking off in July 2025.

Various details have trickled through, but the claim that The Crown star Tom Turner has been cast as a narrator has turned out to be false.

Harry Potter TV show narrator rumor debunked

On October 31, Redanian Intelligence posted the latest casting news and filming updates, including Turner as narrator – but HBO sources have since told Deadline’s Jake Kanter that this is untrue.

“HBO‘s Harry Potter series has generated its fair share of myths in recent months – but here’s one we can dispel: it will not have a narrator,” Kanter wrote.

He continued, “Turner’s voice agency touts his ‘rich’ and ‘luxurious’ tones, but HBO sources said they will not be part of Potter, which is scheduled to premiere in 2027.”

Prior to the confirmation, Potterheads were busy sharing their thoughts on a narrator. On the one hand, it could make the show closer in tone to the Harry Potter novels, but on the other, it might break the immersive feel that made the original films so successful.

Over on Reddit, one wrote, “I think if they do it right it would work really well, and give the series a different tone to differentiate it from the movies. I’m imagining the narrator very British and whimsical.”

“That’s awesome. Puts real emphasis on it being a book adaptation,” said another, while a third added, “It could work really well, and it’ll help further to separate the series from the movies and be an adaptation of its own, which I hope will help people to love both!”

Others aren’t so keen on the idea, with one writing, “I know the books are really filled with Harry’s thoughts and not including them in the show is kinda sad and having a narrator could be a solution, BUT I prefer they use other alternatives.

“Like Harry talking with someone after the event and saying what he thought or felt at that moment, or showing a scene as what Harry thought was gonna happen and then we ‘come back to reality’ and show what really happened.”

“Honestly, I think this undermines the point of an adaptation a bit,” said another. “If they need a narrator to convey the entire story, I feel like they’re not doing it properly.”

And then there are those who sit right in the middle. “I have mixed feelings,” commented one. “It could be either terrible and out of place, or it could be a fitting addition to the series.”

A second chimed in, “A narrator? I think that would work well with the tone of the first three books, but maybe not the last four books which are geared to an older audience.”

But it appears all this speculation was in vain – unless HBO changes its mind, the Harry Potter show won’t be getting a narrator.

Elsewhere in Redanian Intelligence’s report, it states that Peaky Blinders star Daniel Fearn has been cast as a series regular, sparking plenty of discussion about who he might play. But for now, it’s best to take any casting news not confirmed by HBO with a grain of salt.
