Harvard researcher faces “absurd” attack after asking for peace in Weapons screening

Weapons is proving to be the creepiest horror movie of 2025, but one man says he experienced a real-life nightmare when he asked a group of teens to quiet down in the cinema, only to face a “one against five” attack.

Zach Cregger’s new movie is a critical and commercial success, having earned a 94% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes and nearly $149 million at the box office, taking it well past its reported $38 million budget.

Part of its success is down to word of mouth thanks to Weapons’ menacing villain Gladys (Amy Madigan) and the film’s unanswered questions, which have sparked plenty of theories. One person who decided to see what all the fuss is about was Thiago Rentz.

The 35-year-old Harvard researcher from Brazil headed to the AMC Boston Common 19 on Sunday (August 17), but rather than being left shaken by the horror film, he faced a real-life threat instead.

Weapons screening ends in “absurd” attack

Rentz told NBC10 that he had asked a group of rowdy teenagers to be quiet or leave the theater, only for them to rush him once the movie was over and repeatedly punch him, leaving him with a black eye.

Apparently, Rentz wasn’t the only cinema-goer to be disrupted during the Weapons screening. “They were there disturbing all of the people, clapping and screaming all the time,” he said.

“I asked them for respect. I asked them to leave the theater because we just wanted to watch the movie.” When the film was over and everyone had left the theater, the group reportedly surrounded him and wouldn’t let him through.

“It was one, me, against five. They made like a wall so I tried to pass to leave and they couldn’t let me pass,” Rentz said, adding that his friend started shouting for help.

“They just punched me. I didn’t fight back. I was scared and then I just faced the wall, and I just protected my face and my head, but the target was obviously my head because they were punching my head and my face.”

Following the attack, the teens ran away while his friend frantically searched for help. She was eventually able to find a cleaning worker, who led them to a security guard and then the EMTs arrived.

The police showed up around 30 minutes later at 12:45am to get Rentz’s statement, but at this stage the staff at the Boston theater had gone home. Officials reported that Rentz had a minor injury on his nose, and he’s also been left with a black eye.

While Rentz said he’s not heard anything back from AMC yet, he’s hoping changes will be made to ensure the safety of its customers – and that the attackers will face justice.

He also told the outlet that he’ll continue to follow up with the police and the theater to find out if there’s security footage inside that helps identify the suspects.

“Harassment is not good in a public space. This is absurd, so I think they need to hire more people to work as security,” he continued. “I want the attackers to be identified because they need to be punished.”
