Fortnite’s brand new season is here, bringing players the ability to dress up as a soldier and take down mutant bugs, grab loot from “O.X.R. Drop Pod[s]”, and ride in “Hammerhead Choppas.” Sound familiar? Well, you’re not the only ones.
The similarities of Fortnite’s Shock ‘n Awesome Season to Helldivers 2 aren’t exactly subtle. Just like Helldivers, you’re tasked with destroying bugs to protect yourself and your teammates from being overcome.
In fact, even the trailer feels incredibly similar to Helldivers, and that’s not been lost on the game’s developers, Arrowhead.
Arrowhead speaks out over Fortnite season similarities
In the Helldivers 2 Discord server, community manager Katherine Baskin gave her thoughts on the new Fortnite season, commenting that “it’s giving ‘we have Helldivers at home.'”
Shortly after, many other players joked about the same sentiment, with tons using the same phrase whenever Fortnite skins or weapons or gameplay were shared on the Discord. In fact, even the Fortnite trailer was filled with fans referencing Helldivers: “Helldivers, we are needed on another planet,” commented one player.
Despite the rather spicy comment, it’s clear Arrowhead isn’t holding a grudge over the similarities. Baskin followed up in the same Discord with: “I’m not worried. Fortnite is Fortnite, Helldivers is Helldivers. If the kings of video game drip think our drip is cool enough to… inspire them… then that’s super cool. But our games couldn’t be more different from one another. There’s room for us all at the king’s table.”
So, while there are certainly similarities between the two modes, they’re happy working alongside each other. Plus, more soldiers to take down those pesky bugs for Democracy is never a bad thing, regardless of the universe you’re fighting in.
