Jason Momoa has officially enlisted in Sony’s Helldivers movie, which will hit theaters on November 10, 2027.
The reveal comes after Sony confirmed a Helldivers film during its CES 2025 presentation in Las Vegas, when PlayStation Productions head Asad Qizilbash announced the adaptation was in development with Sony Pictures.
Arrowhead creative director Johan Pilestedt said the studio would be involved “in some capacity,” adding, “The short answer is yes. The long answer is that we’ll see.”
By late 2025, Justin Lin had signed on to direct, with Hutch Parker and Qizilbash producing alongside Lin through Perfect Storm Entertainment. Arrowhead publicly backed Lin and told fans to “let Justin Lin work his magic.”
Jason Momoa joins Helldivers movie as Sony sets 2027 release
Sony confirmed that Momoa will star in the feature adaptation, which now has a firm theatrical date of November 10, 2027. The film remains the only major studio wide release scheduled for that date.
Helldivers 2 follows an elite unit of soldiers fighting alien threats to protect Super Earth, a premise that fits squarely within Momoa’s action-heavy resume. He most recently appeared in A Minecraft Movie and is set to play Lobo in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.
The casting sparked immediate reactions from fans, particularly on X. One player pleaded, “Please play the game for at least 100 hours before acting in this movie. I beg you,” which is a tall ask for someone who doesn’t play video games at all.
Momoa has previously said he did not grow up with games: “My mother, when I was growing up, wouldn’t let me play video games. She was like, ‘Get outside, climb a tree, go skateboard.’ I wasn’t allowed to have video games.”
Others leaned into Helldivers’ famously brutal tone. “Please make it that he die in the first 15 minutes of the movie, it will be hilarious,” one fan wrote, while another joked, “I can’t wait for him to be in it for like ten minutes at most, get absolutely annihilated.”
