Gen V Season 2 has demonstrated that Marie is a potential match for Homelander, but her powers might not be what they seem if this hidden detail in the finale trailer is anything to go by. Warning: spoilers ahead!
In Season 2 Episode 7, we finally learned what Godolkin University dean Cipher (Hamish Linklater) has really been up to. Turns out, he’s been Dr. Thomas Godolkin (Ethan Slater) this whole time.
Cipher’s body belongs to a man named Doug, who has been used as a meat puppet by the God U founder for years, all in a bid to enact his master plan: use Marie (Jaz Sinclair) to heal his body and then cull 75% of the students to create a more powerful supe population.
Unfortunately, Marie and co. don’t realize this until it’s too late and she heals Thomas Godolkin. One positive to come out of this is that she literally has the ability to bring people back from the dead… or does she?
Gen V Season 2 Episode 8 trailer sparks Marie theory
In the teaser trailer for Gen V Season 2 Episode 8, Godolkin gets to work enacting his evil plan. But a close-up of his hands show blisters starting to form, much like the burn marks on his old body before Marie healed him.
This may suggest that Marie’s resurrections have a time limit, or they could fade over time if the healed supe uses their powers. One eagle-eyed Gen V fan spotted this blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment, sharing it on the Prime Video show’s subreddit.
Alongside the screenshots, they wrote, “MARIE’S HEALING POWERS WEAR OFF OVER TIME. Here are two pictures of Godolkin’s hand in the finale teaser… There’s some kind of scarring or tissue damage to be seen.
“These were NOT on his hands right after she healed him. I think we’ll learn that Marie’s healing powers aren’t permanent. Godolkin will slowly get his scars back and this will count towards his defeat.”
Here’s the heartbreaking part: Marie also healed her sister Annabeth (Keeya King). If the theory is true, her health may start to decline too.
“But that was only a stab wound, not her entire body. My guess would be that the larger the wound healed, the quicker the effects of Marie’s powers wear off. If this is all correct, Annabeth might be f**ked too,” the Redditor added.
“The only flaw in this is Annabeth’s vision of Marie covered in blood. I wanted to say that it’s Annabeth’s blood, but I don’t know how she’d be able to see that. But who knows.”
Or, as said, the degradation may only start if the healed supe uses their powers. We all know Annabeth doesn’t like being a supe, but she may need to learn to control (and therefore not use) her powers in a bid to survive.
This is, of course, all just speculation at this stage, but it’s certainly piqued the interest of Gen V fans.
“I guess it would depend on the extent of the injury. Some injuries the bodies should be able to heal up on their own even if Marie ‘kick started it’,” wrote one. “I can see more severe injuries like Godolkin’s potentially deteriorating without extra maintenance.”
A second chimed in, “This is amazing. I wonder how that lady from Episode 1 is doing, the lady Marie healed at that club.”
“There’s a lot we don’t know about her powers, and a lot *she* doesn’t know about them, so it’s entirely possible that she has limits we’ve yet to find out,” added a third.
Others have shared alternative theories, with one writing, “From the context of the trailer it looks like he’s in the middle of a fight with Marie as he reaches for the button, so this might just be her attacking his blood like she’s done before to stop people.”
Another asked, “What if instead of wearing off she can reverse? I mean it would be plausible, if you can give life you can also take life. Since she already reversed everything she’s familiar with the cellular structure and should theoretically be able to recreate that.”
