Netflix has released the Stranger Things Season 5 trailer, and everyone’s hoping the Hawkins gang will make it out alive – but there’s a hidden detail that may point to the end of the road for one or more characters.

After nearly a decade of ‘80s nostalgia, Demogorgons, and walkie-talkies, Stranger Things will come to an end with its fifth and final chapter. It’s being split across three parts, with Volume 1 dropping on November 26, Volume 2 on Christmas Day, and the finale on New Year’s Eve 2025

Season 5 will take place in fall 1987, meaning a time jump of more than a year after the events of the previous chapter, with our gang united by a single goal: find and kill Vecna.

Of course, no character deaths have been confirmed, but fans’ worst fears are that one or more of the major players will meet their end while trying to save the world. And the new trailer may hint at that reality with its choice of song.

Stranger Things Season 5 trailer hints at death with ‘devastating’ song

You may have been so caught up in the epic display of Eleven’s powers that you didn’t clock the track playing in the background: an adaptation of Queen’s ‘Who Wants to Live Forever’. In this context, it doesn’t seem random.

Originally written by Brian May for Highlander – a movie about immortality, love, and loss – ‘Who Wants to Live Forever’ is about the pain of watching others die while you remain behind.

The line, “There’s no time for us, there’s no place for us,” captures the heartbreak of saying goodbye and the fleeting nature of life. When it comes to the Netflix series, it feels like foreshadowing.

After years of surviving impossible odds, the song’s use suggests that not everyone will make it to the end, and that the survivors will be left with nothing but memories and love. It also hints at sacrifice, and that some things are meant to end.

This could, of course, be referencing the show itself, or it could just be an emotional ballad to back the events of the Season 5 trailer. But given Stranger Things’ history of using music to foreshadow key moments, it’s not a total reach to pay attention.

Taking to X/Twitter, one wrote, “Leaked trailer for Stranger Things 5 set to Queen’s ‘Who Wants to Live Forever’. My money is on this kid buying the farm,” alongside an image of Will. However, another commented, “Eleven dying would hit harder.”

“The song being ‘Who Wants to Live Forever’ by Queen, I’m actually f**king devastated,” said a third, while a fourth added, “Queen will always make me sob but ‘Who Wants to Live Forever’? Yeah, instant tears.”
