Legendary video game developer Hideo Kojima has announced yet another Death Stranding adaptation, this time for the small screen. A new animated series based on the game has been picked up by Disney+, and Kojima promises it’s going to be “mind blowing.”

Death Stranding lends itself to cinematic storytelling, and so it came as no surprise when Kojima Productions revealed plans for a live-action movie in December 2022. Although it’s still in development, we know A24 is co-producing, while Michael Sarnoski is attached to direct.

But the live-action adaptation is only the beginning of Death Stranding’s expansion plans. In September this year, Kojima Productions revealed that an anime movie subtitled Mosquito is also in the works, and is set to tell a “bold, original story.”

This week, yet another project was unveiled when Kojima stepped onto the stage at the Disney+ Originals Preview event in Hong Kong: an animated TV show based on the beloved action-adventure game.

Death Stranding animated series to stream on Disney+

The working title for the new series is Death Stranding: Isolations, and it is currently aiming for a 2027 release date. What’s more, the anime will be streaming exclusively on Disney+.

There’s plenty of talent behind the scenes, with Kojima serving as executive producer, and Takayuki Sano – who’s worked on titles such as Attack on Titan, One Piece, and Dragon Ball Z – directing.

Much like the anime movie, Death Stranding: Isolations will tell a completely new story separate from Sam’s journey in the video games, centering on a young man and woman as they set out on an adventure.

In terms of visuals, the series will be told through traditional, hand-drawn 2D animation style, with some of Japan’s top animation talent at E&H production currently working to bring the series to life.

New concept art created by Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045 character designer Ilya Kuvshinov was also revealed at the event, as was the synopsis: “Once, there was an explosion… Lonesome souls of the dead manifest in the physical world, reaching in search of the living.

“However, the connection they create triggers a massive explosion that eradicates anything of this world – a phenomenon referred to as the Death Stranding. These events wipe out nations as well as civilization itself.

“People who remain are now isolated, withdrawn, and without connections. As humanity stands at the brink a legendary porter sets out to transport both cargo and wishes of its senders, reconnecting people in the hope that they might still be saved…

“Somewhere in North America, just as Sam Bridges walks through the continent in order to save America, the someones are also trying to deal with their isolation in their own way.

“An old man trying to realize salvation through ways outside of the connection advocated by Bridges. A female warrior who tries to kickstart a world of constant fighting. A boy with a grudge against Bridges. A girl who embraces loneliness.

“On the precipice of the end of humanity and the world, their fates and hopes converge, as another story of Death Stranding begins. And now, comes another explosion…”

Kojima elaborated further on the stage of what to expect, saying he wanted Death Stranding to expand into anime as it allows for more freedom. According to his description (via The Hollywood Reporter), Isolations will be “pretty mind-blowing.”
