A high school in Michigan has taken “strong and decisive” action against a football player who went viral for fracturing an opponent’s spine.
On September 23, a clip of a high school football game in Michigan went viral on X (formerly Twitter). It wasn’t a wild celebration or big-time pass, but rather one player bellyflopping onto another at the end of the play.
The lineman, who was representing Kalamazoo Central High School, jumped on top of his Lakeshore High School opponent, leading to a clip that would rack up millions of views. Some viewers joked about it, comparing it to professional wrestling, while others were outraged by what they’d seen.
It was ultimately revealed by the Lakeshore player’s mother that the 15-year-old had suffered two spinal fractures. His season is over, and she said he will be “lucky” if he’s able to walk again.
Kalamazoo Central High School has, however, taken “strong and decisive” action against their player, for the “egregious” act.
“Our staff has been speaking with both schools since Friday. Kalamazoo Central has taken this matter very seriously and they have taken strong and decisive action,” the Michigan High School Athletics Association told Fox News.
“This type of behavior is unacceptable and does not reflect the values of sportsmanship, respect, and integrity that Kalamazoo Public Schools expects from student-athletes, coaches and the entire school community,” the Kalamazoo Public Schools said.
The specifics behind the “strong and decisive action” have not been revealed, but is likely a suspension from play.
The video of the incident continues to be shared on social media and has generated attention from all over.
