Hollow Knight: Silksong developer Team Cherry provided a brief update on the game’s release window following Microsoft’s Xbox Games Showcase, which had caused some confusion.

The Metroidvania sequel to 2017’s Hollow Knight, Silksong began life as DLC for the first game, subsequently becoming a standalone sequel as the project grew.

Unquestionably one of 2025’s most anticipated games, the title was featured prominently during Microsoft’s Xbox Ally handheld reveal. Confirmed to be available on the device day one, many took that statement to mean that Silksong would debut alongside the Ally.

As clarified by Team Cherry, however, this is not the case.

Team Cherry response

In a Discord post subsequently shared on the Silksong subreddit, Team Cherry’s Matthew Griffin said, “I confirmed BEFORE Holiday – we are not tied to a console release.”

As there’s no definitive start and end date to the Holiday season, when exactly Silksong will arrive remains up in the air. Since May, we’ve known that the game will be playable in some form at Australia’s National Museum of Screen Culture on September 18, 2025, as part of a Game Worlds exhibit.

Besides that, details are slim. Fans have been convinced for some time that the hype behind Silksong would make it a prime candidate to be shadowdropped, albeit to no avail.

With Summer Game Fest now wrapped up for another year, two potential avenues for a surprise release are Gamescom 2025 in August or a yet-to-be-announced showcase from one of the big three platform holders.
