A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms has concluded on HBO, meaning attention is now turning to sequel series The Sworn Sword, and how the Blackfyre Rebellions will play into proceedings. SPOILERS ahead…
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms plays out between the events of House of the Dragon and Game of Thrones.
Season 1 ended with a revelation about Ser Duncan’s past, Prince Maekar becoming enraged that Egg has again run off, and both knight and squire heading to Dorne for a new adventure.
The story is fast approaching the fabled Blackfyre Rebellions, and showrunner Ira Parker has been explaining how those uprisings will influence Dunk and Egg’s story.
The Blackfyre Rebellions will “inform” A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Season 2
The Blackfyre Rebellions are a series of civil wars that kick off when King Aegon IV legitimizes his bastards, including Daemon Blackfyre.
Rival claims to the Iron Throne trigger battles between Blackfyre supporters and loyalists, which reshape the political landscape, and weaken the Targaryen dynasty for generations.
Those rebellions are heading Dunk and Egg’s way, and Ira Parker says that civil unrest will start affecting their story.
“The Blackfyre Rebellions are in and out of their lives for Dunk and Egg, all the way up until pretty late I’d say,” Parker told Variety. “The Second Blackfyre Rebellion factors in pretty heavily into one of the books, and obviously we make a few mentions to it in Season 1. But I’d say it’s important background and informs a lot of the characters that they come in contact with.
“Essentially, we are 15 years outside of a massive civil war, and so there’s still a lot of those lingering resentments. There are certainly a lot of open wounds left.”
Don’t expect new stories or side quests
Parker continued: “One of the promises I made to [author] George [R.R. Martin] very early on is that I really wouldn’t create story. We are adding to the character and the world. We’re writing this TV show as if George had written a novel instead of a novella. So we’re just filling out things that he naturally probably would have done.
“But we don’t send people on any side quests, and we try not to get too bogged down in history. These are nice, little contained journeys. It’s an action adventure series, almost. It’s Dunk and his squire having fun and adventures, getting into trouble.
“Even if we do take two years between seasons, there are no cliffhangers. We’ve told a story and wrapped it up. Hopefully you’ve enjoyed it, and you can come back and see their journey next time.”
