Gaming industry veteran Rich Vogel, who has worked on everything from Star Wars to Halo, claimed to have heard GTA 6 has online features that resemble an MMORPG. If it holds true, it could point to the most expansive online offering from Rockstar Games yet.
Following its latest delay, hype has only continued to mount for GTA 6. Despite a 12-year gap from GTA 5, the sequel remained the most anticipated game at this year’s The Game Awards event.
Given Rockstar’s penchant for secrecy, any scrap of information is in high demand. Outside of the two trailers and a handful of screenshots, however, we’ve had little to go off in an official capacity.
Moreover, we haven’t yet seen anything relating to the next iteration of GTA Online. However, one veteran game developer has claimed to have heard a bit about it, and if the comments prove accurate, it could point to a massively multiplayer online role-playing game-esque future for the game.
Game dev claims GTA 6’s online mode resembles an MMORPG
Comments come by way of Rich Vogel, a developer who knows a thing or two about online games, having worked with BioWare on Star Wars MMO, The Old Republic, as well as more recently, Halo Infinite and New World.
In an interview with Wccftech, the developer claimed to have heard about a number of GTA 6 details from peers in the industry. Of course, it’s worth taking the second-hand information with a grain of salt, but the comments point to an expansive online component.
“If what I have been hearing about GTA 6’s features and gameplay is true, it could evolve into an MMORPG, as many of its planned features are typically found in MMORPGs,” Vogel said.
Obviously, that doesn’t give us a ton to go off. MMORPG features are wide-ranging, but what it does indicate, if true, is that GTA 6 is gearing up for a far bigger online offering.
GTA 5’s online mode has certainly evolved a great deal over the years, showing similar signs to what might be considered MMORPG-esque with its massive multiplayer lobbies and lively worlds.
As we’ve seen with the role-playing community, especially, Los Santos has become a world thousands of players inhabit each and every day, fulfilling their fantasies as cops, robbers, and everything in between. It’s entirely likely GTA 6 doubled down on this focus, providing even more depth to its gameplay systems.
One example we recently saw in GTA 5’s online mode, was an update that added weightlifting mini-games. This enables players to get their characters fit in a number of ways, changing their physiques in the process.
Could this be just one small glimpse at what’s to come in GTA 6? If what Vogel has heard holds true, it certainly seems likely.
