We got the chance to speak with Quarter Up, the development team behind Invincible VS, who let us in on an exciting development regarding the game’s original story mode.
Invincible VS is on track for a 2026 release, pitting the comic-turned-Amazon Prime series’ super-powered characters against each other in a fast-paced, 3v3 tag fighting game.
Die-hard fans of the comic are already anticipating deep cuts that haven’t yet made their debut in the animated series, but the folks at Quarter Up say there’s room for characters who haven’t been involved in the source material whatsoever.
They’ve already made public the fact that Invincible VS will feature a completely original, standalone story mode, but what they hadn’t announced was the inclusion of a totally new character to go along with it.
Invincible VS’s story mode will feature completely new character
Executive Producer Michael Willette, Narrative Director Michael Rogers, and Art Director Dan Eder spoke with us about the story mode in an exclusive interview, reiterating that it will be completely new and something fans haven’t seen in either the comics or the animated series and will contain over 25 minutes of bespoke animation.
It’s being written by Helen Leigh, the co-executive producer and writer for Invincible, as well as co-creator Robert Kirkman and Michael Rogers, who said they “wanted it to almost feel like a playable episode of the show.”
This led to another exciting tidbit: on top of as-yet unnamed returning favorites, Willette told us that the story mode will feature a brand-new, never-before-seen character that’s completely original to the game.
“There’re definitely gonna be fan-favorites and there will be a brand-new character who has not appeared anywhere in the Invincible universe,” he said. “I’m not gonna say anything more about that character, but there will be a brand-new character, and also fan-favorites and personal favorites. ‘Cause I’m selfish.”
“Pretty much every character” from Invincible has been considered
No other information about this character was given during our conversion, but they assured us that they’ve considered including nearly every character in the comics and show. Given the wealth of characters they have to work with, it’s difficult to pare down their roster for launch, but a major guiding factor has been to make sure the cast is varied in terms of playstyle.
“We’ve talked about pretty much every character at one point or another as potential [additions],” Eder said. “One of the biggest priorities has always been, ‘How do we make it feel varied and not redundant?’
“We don’t want the entire cast to just be Viltrumites or just regular superhero characters. We wanna do a mix of, depending on your play style and or your preferences as an Invincible fan, you would wanna go with a character that might be completely different from another character.
“The challenge is always, ‘How do we make it work within the context of the game?’ And we take on these challenges. Sometimes we’d have a discussion saying, ‘Hey, okay, we all want this character.’ It’s gonna be a bitch to make it work, just because it’s not straightforward. But then we all talk about it and say, ‘You know what? It’s worth it. Let’s do it.'”
Our interview also discussed the introduction of Cecil Stedman as the latest addition to Invincible VS’s cast, who brings his high-tech gadgets and ReAnimen into the fray with massive mixup potential.
