Gen V Season 2 Episode 8 has landed, bringing the latest chapter of the Prime Video series to a close. While it perfectly sets up The Boys Season 5, where does that leave Season 3? Warning: spoilers ahead!
The big bad of Gen V’s sophomore outing has been Godolkin dean Cipher (Hamish Linklater), who has spent most of his time training Marie to harness her full potential. His motives were a mystery until Season 2 Episode 7, when we found out the shocking truth: Cipher doesn’t exist.
The man we’ve been seeing is a guy named Doug, whose body has been used as a meat puppet by God U founder Thomas Godolkin. He tricked Marie into healing his own body, before enacting his evil plan to eliminate students whose powers he deemed unimpressive.
This is just one of many storylines wrapped up in the Season 2 finale, which also teases plenty more to come from the Gen V students. Now, it’s a question of which TV show they’ll be showing up in.
Is Gen V Season 3 happening?
The question is up in the air, but here’s what we know: creator Eric Kripke has said there is a plan for Gen V Season 3, but it will only get the greenlight from Amazon if enough people watch Season 2.
This was revealed in an interview with The Wrap, where he said, “We have a plan for Gen V Season 3, and we’re psyched about it, but we need enough viewers to watch Season 2 to justify Season 3.
“Now’s the time that they’re paying attention to the numbers. So don’t watch even a year from now. Turn on Prime [Video] and watch it now. If enough people watch then we’ll get a Season 3.”
Kripke shared similar comments with the Radio Times, stating, “It’s a very traditional television business answer, which is it’s going to depend on the ratings when it’s all said and done.
“We have more Gen V story to tell. We have a really fun pitch for Season 3. I really hope we get to do it, but that is up to the audience and the television gods.”
There’s been no update from Prime Video just yet, and we can’t hazard a guess from past experiences. Amazon MGM Studios announced the renewal of Gen V Season 2 on October 19, 2023, before the Season 1 finale aired.
Given the Season 2 finale has already arrived, we’ll just have to wait and see if and when a third chapter gets the greenlight.
Since it’s still not been confirmed, we can’t say when the Gen V Season 3 release date might be. But if it does get the go-ahead, we can expect it to arrive in 2027 earliest, or later depending on The Boys and its spinoffs.
You see, the flagship series draws to a close with its fifth chapter, and all we know is that this will be arriving sometime in 2026.
As said, Gen V Season 2 was renewed in October 2023 and premiered in September 2025. Between that, we had The Boys Season 4 in June 2024, so we’d expect the two shows to follow a similar pattern if Season 3 does get renewed.
So, Season 2 in 2025, The Boys Season 5 in 2026, and Season 3 in 2027. However, the upcoming prequel series Vought Rising is also in development and making progress, so there could be a longer gap.
We’ll keep this space updated as and when new information rolls in.
How Gen V Season 2 Sets Up The Boys Season 5
One thing we know for sure is that the events of Gen V Season 2 will roll into The Boys Season 5. In the finale, Marie kills Thomas Godolkin, leaving her and the gang wondering whether to go on the run from Vought.
However, Starlight and A-Train arrive on the scene (yes, A-Train has officially completed his redemption arc) and offer them the chance to join the resistance against Vought, Homelander, and the Seven.
They oblige, meaning The Boys now have some of the most powerful supes on the planet on their team, including Marie – the one and only person who has the potential to beat Homelander.
Now, fans are speculating whether Marie might use her powers to heal Butcher, paving the way for the Butcher vs. Homelander showdown that’s been teased from the start.
As said by one fan on Reddit, “Theory: Marie is going to cure Butcher of Kessler in Season 5 The Boys… Doesn’t mean he survives. He could be cured of Kessler before fighting Homelander and dying in the process of taking him down.”
Another speculated, “Marie is going to cure Butcher and pull the V out of Homelander, and The Boys go to town on Homelander.”
But others don’t believe the God U students will have as big a role in The Boys’ final chapter. “Butcher’s destiny is to die fighting Homelander. It’s either going to be him and Homelander beating each other to death or Hughie killing him,” said one.
“Marie will never have an impactful role like that in Season 5.”
Again, it’s another ‘time will tell’ situation. We know that Gen V cast members are set to reprise their roles in The Boys Season 5, with a trailer shown at SDCC including Jordan Li. How big their parts will be is still up for debate.
In a conversation with Variety, Kripke was asked what The Boys ending means for Gen V and the other spinoffs in the works. “I think they can and should continue,” he replied.
“The Boys’ story is about Butcher and Homelander and these two planets crashing into each other and this particular story doesn’t work without both of them. And you can only keep that going for so long.
“So what I would say is, this particular story is ending, the Butcher-Homelander is ending. But there can be other stories and other corners of the universe. And hopefully, it’s vibrant and perverted enough to allow for those stories.
“So hopefully, Gen V continues, hopefully, a couple other things we have in development continue.”
As for how the Gen V Season 3 plot might play out, Kripke is understandably keeping his cards close to his chest. It’s a little too early to speculate, but how The Boys ends will no doubt have an impact on the future storyline.
Who would be in the Gen V Season 3 cast?
Provided they survive the events of The Boys Season 5, we can expect all of the main Godolkin crew to return, including:
- Jaz Sinclair as Marie Moreau
- Keeya King as Annabeth Moreau
- Lizze Broadway as Emma Meyer
- Maddie Phillips as Cate Dunlap
- London Thor as Jordan Li
- Derek Luh as Jordan Li
- Asa Germann as Sam
Two cast members we most likely won’t be seeing (unless there are flashbacks) are Ethan Slater and Hamish Linklater as Thomas Godolkin and Cipher, as they both die in the Gen V Season 2 finale.
