Is How I Met Your Mother leaving Netflix? Viewers spot “annoying” warning

Netflix has been the streaming home of How I Met Your Mother for months now, but a new warning has left some fans annoyed (to put it lightly), raising the question: is the beloved sitcom leaving the streaming service for good?

2025 has been an incredible year for TV. So far, we’ve had second seasons from Severance, Wednesday, Andor, and The Last of Us, as well as Squid Game Season 3, The Bear Season 3, Daredevil: Born Again, Peacemaker Season 2, and now, It: Welcome to Derry.

And that’s before we get to breakout hits like the Netflix drama Adolescence and The Pitt. And, let’s not forget, Stranger Things Season 5 will finally premiere later this month.

But sometimes, you just want an easy binge-watch to crack on when you’re sitting down for dinner, and How I Met Your Mother fits the bill. All nine seasons of the sitcom have been on Netflix US since June 2024, but this may all be changing very soon.

Is How I Met Your Mother leaving Netflix?

Yes, sadly, How I Met Your Mother is leaving Netflix next month. You have until December 2, 2025 to binge-watch the show on this specific streaming platform

The reason it’s not the first of the month is because of the licensing deal expiration date. The CBS show was brought to Netflix on June 3, 2024, meaning it will be leaving exactly 18 months later on December 3, 2025.

In case you needed any more confirmation, the series now has a content warning on Netflix stating: “Leaving soon.” It’s a frustrating yet unavoidable reality of the complex and often transient nature of licensing rights within the streaming world.

Unlike Netflix Originals, which the company owns outright, many titles on the platform are acquired through licensing deals with studios and distributors. These agreements grant Netflix the rights to stream content for a predetermined period, which can range from a few months to several years.

Once the licensing term expires, the content is removed unless a renewal is negotiated. This model allows the streamer to offer a diverse range of titles each month, but it also means that popular films and series can disappear with little notice.

A famous example is the Friends debacle: in January 2020, after years on Netflix US, the NBC sitcom moved to HBO Max thanks to a deal obtained by Warner Bros.

Similarly, The Office was a Netflix favorite for years before its licensing deal expired in 2020, and NBCUniversal decided to keep it for its new-at-the-time platform, Peacock.

How to stream How I Met Your Mother

Of course, even after How I Met Your Mother leaves Netflix, there are other ways to watch it online. In the US, your best bet is Hulu or Disney+, where you’ll find all nine seasons. You can also buy individual episodes on on-demand platforms including Amazon Prime.

Or, you could go the traditional route and buy the box set on DVD or blu-ray. Physical media has been on the rise in recent years due to frustrations over streaming rights, so this could be the way to go.

Right now, the nine-season How I Met Your Mother box set is $43.99 from Walmart, but you can also buy the collection second hand if you’re strapped for cash.

Despite the alternative options, Netflix subscribers aren’t happy about the news. Taking to Reddit, one said, “‘Leaving soon’ wtf! I know Netflix is infamous for this but come on, where am I supposed to rewatch it now?”

“This pisses me off,” said another, while a third replied, “Honestly. After Stranger Things finishes up I’ll have very little use for Netflix. They constantly pull sh*t off of there… I’ll probably still keep Netflix but this has become so old and annoying.”

The second commenter responded, “Yeah I legit only care for The Ranch and HIMYM. Other than that they have been dropping either sh*tty movies that no one cares about, starting shows then canceling them, or releasing old movies for short periods of time before removing them months later.

“It’s been a year since HIMYM has been on Netflix and already it’s getting pulled. Google says it’s on Hulu though and last time I checked it was… Start a subscription if you don’t have one already. Netflix gets me burnt out.”

There are plenty of fans promoting the benefits of physical media too, including this person who said, “This is why I have started my DVD collection. ‘It’s not on Netflix! Where is it now?!?’ My f**king shelf, that’s where.

“Highly recommend this idea. They still make DVD players, or you can get a cheap one from a second hand store like Goodwill. Or, hell, an optical drive and your computer will do it.”

And then, of course, there are the illegal suggestions (aka piracy). “Time to sail the high seas,” quipped one, with another adding, “Series hopes around all platforms. Piracy or physical media is the answer.”

Some have even shared a theory: streaming services slap the “Leaving soon” label on shows to boost views. “They usually do this so people start watching,” said one, while another agreed, “For real, I remember when it told me Suits was leaving and it never left.”

Let it be known that these claims have never been verified, and you can trust that How I Met Your Mother will be leaving Netflix US next month. Until then, watch away, or start building that DVD collection.
