Death Stranding 2 doesn’t pull its punches during its storyline, delivering heartbreaking moments and slightly confusing explanations. This is no different with Lou.

If you’ve played the first Death Stranding, then you’ll know that Lou is the small baby who gets rescued by Sam, the protagonist. The second game also sees the return of Lou, but in the first few hours of Death Stranding 2, Fragile and Lou are attacked in a cutscene.

What follows has left plenty wondering whether poor Lou dies or miraculously survives. Well, here’s the less-than-simple (we’ve made it as simple as we can) answer.

There are about to be some pretty big spoilers for Death Stranding 2 ahead, so approach with caution.

Is Lou dead in Death Stranding 2?

Yes, Lou is technically dead, though it’s a little more complicated than that.

At the beginning of the game, Fragile and Lou are attacked, and Fragile tries to send Lou away in order to let her live.

In doing so, Lou’s physical body and soul are separated. Fragile sends her body away, but her soul is still tethered, appearing as a BT in the BB pod found in Sam’s bunker.

Filled with grief, Sam then sees Lou as a baby for the most part. Though her body is undeniably dead.

As you progress, Tomorrow will explain that she’s the grown-up version of Lou. She grew up on the Beach where she was teleported, where time passes differently than on Earth.

So, technically her physical body is dead, but her soul manifests into the Beach where she remains kind of alive. Who said a Kojima game was simple?
