Stranger Things 5 Volume 2 climaxed with an emotional scene for Will, but a shocking new fan theory suggests that all might not be as it seems within Byers.
During Episode 7 of Stranger Things 5, Eleven frees Will from Vecna’s clutches, and the information they gain enables the duo to help save Max’s life.
Then in Episode 8, Will reveals that the monster formerly known as Henry Creel preys on thoughts, memories, and secrets to control his prey.
He therefore decides to tell his own truth, by coming out during an emotional monologue. But one TikToker believes Byers is still being controlled by Vecna during this sequences. Potential SPOILERS ahead…
Will’s monologue hints at darker truth in Stranger Things 5
“The truth is, I am different,” Will tells his friends and family. “I just pretended like I wasn’t because I didn’t want to be. I wanted to be like everyone else. I wanted to be like my friends and I am like you. I’m like you in… almost every way.
“We like playing D&D late into the night. And we like that old-person smell in Mike’s basement. And we like biking to Melvald’s for malted milkshakes. And we like getting lost in the woods….”
A TikToker called @elliefilm.s has posted a video claiming: “This is not entirely Will,” before stating “Melvald’s is a general store, not a place for milkshakes. Will’s mom even works there. How could Will mix this up?”
They add: “That’s because in the 50s Melvald’s was a diner, the time period Henry was there… why would Will mention something that predates him entirely?”
The TikToker also questions his next claim: “Getting lost in the woods is a fun activity for Will? Will’s trauma started by getting lost in the woods. Will would never enjoy that.”
This theory doesn’t explain why everyone smiles at the Melvald’s claim rather than pushing back on it, and would obviously undermine what’s one of the most important scenes in the history of Stranger Things, but it’s definitely food for thought.
More evidence to suggest Will is still possessed by Vecna
Stranger Things keeps repeating that Vecna isn’t yet done with “William” during Season 5, wanting him to continue to spy, by being his ears and eyes.
Just before he comes out to the group, Will asks Max some pretty specific questions, concerning how she survived for so long in Henry’s mind.
Should Vecna still be controlling Will, this line of enquiry makes sense, with the villain fishing for information that will help him further control the 12 children trapped in the Creel House. So in this respect, it does make sense.
