The series takes place in 1962, 27 years before the events of Andy Muschietti’s first IT movie during Pennywise the Clown’s (Bill Skarsgard) previous hunting cycle in the infamous town.
The first episode follows a group of schoolkids, including Mikkal Karim-Fidler as Teddy Uris, Jack Molloy Legault as Phil Malkin, and Matilda Legault as Susie Malkin… But the entity that often disguises itself as Pennywise butchers all three of them at the end. It’s a shocking twist, and means that the story will examine the aftermath of the mini massacre.

It: Welcome to Derry Episode 2 will be available to stream on HBO Max at 6pm PT/9pm ET on Friday, October 31. HBO confirmed that the show is slightly messing with the release schedule so that fans celebrating Halloween will have something new to watch.

Clearly, Muschietti and HBO have some surprises in store for this new chapter of Pennywise’s story, so it’s going to be important not get the reveals ruined on social media.

There are eight episodes in It: Welcome to Derry, and the story is only going to get even more twisted. Muschietti addressed the brutal twist ahead of It: Welcome to Derry Episode 2, saying that it was a conscious decision to keep fans on their toes.
“This is strategically a devastating event to set the audience into that sense of ‘nothing is safe in this world,'” he told Entertainment Weekly. “We kind of trick the audience into thinking that these are the new Losers. Well, guess what? I guess they’re all dead.”
The violence is just a taste of what to come, and we wrote in our review that the show “widens the story of the titular town (and clown), alongside the brutal uncompromising violence it inflicts on the entire cast.”
