It: Welcome to Derry is packed full of references to the wider Stephen King universe, but there’s one Easter egg for It: Chapter Two that snuck by fans.
The show takes place 27 years before Andy Muschietti’s first It movie during the previous hunting cycle of the creature that calls itself Pennywise. The savage first episode delivered a brutal twist as the monster ripped apart several children, proving that nobody is safe in the new horror series.
Not only has the filmmaker managed to tie the show into other movies like The Shining and The Shawshank Redemption, he also snuck in some references to the DC Universe.
But there’s one Easter egg in It: Welcome to Derry Episode 2 that connects to a major jump scare in It Chapter Two.
Stanley Kersh is the husband of the monstrous Mrs Kersh from It: Chapter Two
During It: Welcome to Derry Episode 2, Charlotte Hanlon (Taylour Paige) goes into town to buy groceries, and visits the local butcher’s shop. Inside she talks to the owner, Stan Kersh. He’s the husband of Mrs Kersh, who fans might remember from one of the scariest moments in It Chapter Two.
In the 2019 movie, Beverly Marsh (Jessica Chastain) visits her father’s old apartment, and instead finds Mrs Kersh living there.
She appears to be a sweet old lady, but it soon becomes clear that something is very wrong with her due to a rotting chest, and the photo of her Pennywise-looking father Bob Gray (Bill Skarsgård) on the wall…
When Mrs Kersh goes into the kitchen and Beverly is distracted, she walks naked in the background while creepily twitching. At that point it’s clear that Mrs Kersh is another form of It, and a monstrous version of the old woman emerges from the kitchen and attacks Beverly.
So Stan’s very existence surely means that Mrs Kersh is in Derry, but how did she wind up becoming a puppet for It? Hopefully that’s one of the mysteries that the show will answer.
