Episode 1 of Peacemaker Season 2 did the Justice League dirty, and DCEU fans are venting their rage at James Gunn.
It’s been all change at DC these past few years, with James Gunn and Peter Safran taking charge of the studio’s movie and TV properties, and promptly replacing the DCEU with the DCU.
That meant a new Superman this summer, and what looks like the end for Jared Leto’s Joker. They’ve even been retconning their own work, with the Justice League cameo at the end of Peacemaker Season 1 being replaced by a Justice Gang appearance during a Season 2 recap.
That change is clearly for the sake of consistency moving forward, but it has fans of the Snyderverse raging on social media.
DC fans split over James Gunn’s Peacemaker retcon
“That’s a little silly isn’t it?” asks one fan of the switch. “I mean, James Gunn could’ve just done the easiest thing ever of ‘alternate universe story’ and moved on???? Feels really hamfisted imo.”
Similar sentiment is expressed here: “This feels so forced. We could just not have this scene at all instead.”
Another takes it further, writing: “Gunn has truly destroyed DC and I refuse to support anything he does going forward. It doesn’t even have to be Snyder to replace him anymore. It’s ABG now #AnybodyButGunn.”
While a fourth compares James Gunn to Marvel’s Mad Titan, saying: “They Thanos-snapped the whole DCEU cameo out of existence… wild how DC keeps rebooting instead of just fixing what’s broken.”
In more level-headed corners of X, facts are being stated: “So basically they scrubbed out the Snyderverse ties and gave Peacemaker his own sandbox – translation: DC hit the reboot button without saying the word ‘reboot.'”
While there’s confusion elsewhere, with one viewer asking: “So Season 1 is now the actual beginning of the DCU? I’m so confused…” and another claiming: “That doesn’t add up. Suicide Squad is DCEU canon, so they’d have to retcon a lot to pull this off.”
But it hasn’t been universally negative, and some DC fans are happy with the change. “Yes! Snyder is being erased! This is great,” writes one, while another states: “Gunn does some satisfying things to p*ss off the cult.”
Peacemaker is now airing on HBO Max in the US and Sky Max in the UK, though there’s also a sneaky watch the series for free.
