James Gunn has shut down a report that claimed the script for The Batman 2 would be turned in imminently. Unfortunately, according to the DC chief, it wasn’t true.

Puck News reported that writer-director Matt Reeves was set to deliver the long-awaited script on Monday (June 25), coming after multiple delays and speculation over the future of Robert Pattinson’s Batman in the wider franchise.

The report also alleged that Gunn and co-CEO Peter Safran expected the script more than a year ago, and frustrations have been building inside Warner Bros. Discovery – including from CEO David Zaslav.

While Gunn said he’s “mostly quit” debunking rumors on social media, he directly addressed this one on Threads.

James Gunn says The Batman 2 script hasn’t been handed in

A fan asked Gunn if the report was accurate, and he concisely replied: “It’s not true.”

He didn’t address anything else in the Puck report. For example, it claimed that production is set to begin in January 2026 after Pattinson finishes his work on Dune 3 (that casting hasn’t strictly been confirmed either, but he’s almost definitely in it).

While the report noted rumors about DC “moving on” from Reeves due to him being a “notoriously slow filmmaker” (as well as him dealing with personal issues), Gunn has constantly supported the director on social media and in other interviews.

Speaking to EW, Gunn said he was expecting the script for the sequel in June (maybe the Puck report meant next Monday, as in June 30).

“I hope that happens. We feel really good about it. Matt’s excited. I talk to Matt all the time. I’m totally excited about it. So we can’t wait to read the scripts, but we haven’t read it yet, if that’s your question,” he said.

“People should get off Matt’s nuts because it’s like, let the guy write the screenplay in the amount of time he needs to write it. That’s just the way it is. He doesn’t owe you something because you like his movie. I mean, you like his movie because of Matt. So let Matt do things the way he does.”
