Peacemaker Season 2 is over, and according to writer-director James Gunn there are currently no plans for Season 3, meaning Christopher Smith will return elsewhere in the DC Universe.
The Peacemaker Season 2 finale featured a seismic event involving a prison planet called Salvation, inspired by an idea that originated with George R.R. Martin.
Episode 8 featured some shocking Imp action, nearly ended on a happier note, and almost included a Deadpool cameo.
But instead the series bowed out with a depressing cliffhanger that sets up the forthcoming Superman movie Man of Tomorrow rather than Season 3, which might not even happen…
Why James Gunn isn’t developing Peacemaker Season 3
When Deadline asked James Gunn if he’s made plans for Peacemaker Season 3, the showrunner responded with: “No, this is about the wider DCU and other stories in which this will play out right now. That doesn’t mean that there won’t be. I don’t want to never say never, but right now, no, this is about the future of the DCU. It’s an important character.”
And that importance sounds like it’s going to extend to multiple movies in the DC pipeline.
When asked if Peacemaker will have a “broader” role in the universe, Gunn said: “Moving forward, yes. He’s important. He’s really important to me. Peacemaker is an important character. I said from the beginning when we took on this job, it’s about really propping up and maintaining and repositioning.
“The big diamond properties that DC has, the Batmans and Wonder Womans and Supermans, and then creating diamond properties out of the smaller characters like Peacemaker.”
So while Gunn wouldn’t be drawn on if Chris Smith is appearing in either Supergirl or Man of Tomorrow – the next two movies on the DC slate – he does say that “Salvation and that story involves Rick Flag, it involves Lex and Superman,” so expect Peacemaker to factor into the latter.
