The news that Krypto would be officially joining the Superman movie was music to our ears. But he doesn’t just have to drag his owner through the snow, according to James Gunn.
Sometimes, there’s nothing better than a dog outperforming every single human in its cast. We had The Artist, we had Anatomy of a Fall, and now it’s DC’s turn to show us how it’s done.
As Superman reconciles his alien Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as reporter Clark Kent, he’s joined by canine sidekick Krypto for the ride. He’s partly made by visual effects – being 3D modeled after Gunn’s dog Ozu – and half based on real-life stand-in, Jolene.
But should our “no-so-good boy” be relegated to a sidekick all his life? If you’ve been keeping a keen eye on Gunn’s online moves, you might have seen he’s all but let slip a Superman spinoff is coming.
James Gunn hints animated Krypto Superman spinoff is coming
No, we’re not talking about DC League of Super-Pets. According to James Gunn, Krypto’s very own animated spinoff could be in the pipeline, thanks to a sneaky Instagram response you might have missed.
Replying to one of Gunn’s Instagram posts, a fan wrote, “If we got an animated spinoff series of Krypto alone, I’d be happy,” to which Gunn replied, “You’re in luck.”
While this could be referring to the previously announced Krypto short film, this doesn’t necessarily rule out any extended projects in the future. In the meantime, fans can expect the first of four short Krypto films in September 2025. According to Gunn, expect the vibe to be “fun and goofy.”
“Honestly I kind of love how Gunn is reclaiming certain DC superheroes and their sidekicks for kids. Particularly Superman. Adult fans have ruined the genre in many ways,” one fan posted on Reddit.
A second weighed in, “I was actually just thinking that. We’ll see if it pans out, but I think realizing that superheroes, especially a character like Superman, should be for kids and families was the only play.”
“If there’s no streeky and ace in it, we riot. I loved the old Krypto the Super Dog show as a kid,” a third added.
Alongside the DC comics, Krypto the Superdog was the original animated series he featured in. You can also spot Superman’s sidekick in Smallville, Titans, and the series finale of Superman & Lois.
Just how much Krypto will appear in Gunn’s Superman remains to be seen, although trailers would suggest there’ll be a hefty dose of CGI Jolene.
Other animated projects definitely confirmed to be in the works include DC Super Powers, Starfire, and My Adventures with Green Lantern.
