James Gunn knows he’s made fans wait a long time for Peacemaker Season 2, but there are a few surprises in store – including one “really big cameo.”
John Cena debuted as the titular anti-hero in 2021’s The Suicide Squad. He reprised his role in the HBO Max series, picking up after the film and following him as he joined Project Butterfly, a mysterious motley crew put together by Amanda Waller to stop a species of parasitic aliens.
It was a smash hit for the streaming platform, with each episode building viewership and the show receiving positive reviews (it has a 93% Rotten Tomatoes score). However, that was more than three years ago, and a lot has changed since then.
More specifically, James Gunn is now the co-CEO of DC, and the DCU is about to kick off with Superman in July. Let’s just say, Peacemaker is a big part of the franchise’s plans looking ahead.
James Gunn reveals key details about Peacemaker Season 2
The first trailer for Peacemaker Season 2 already revealed two cameos from Superman: Isabela Merced’s Hawkgirl and Nathan Fillion’s Guy Gardner/Green Lantern, two members of the Justice Gang.
“We see a lot of different characters from Superman in the [season], [including] Isabela and Nathan and Sean, and then we see a bunch of other characters later on in the season from other parts of the DCU and from Superman,” Gunn told EW.
“There might even be one really, really, really big cameo near the end of the show.”
Who is he talking about? Could it be David Corenswet’s Superman? This is the most likely option, but there’s a chance he could use Peacemaker to unveil another DCU casting; what if the studio’s new Batman (or perhaps even Robert Pattinson) makes an appearance, or we find out who’s playing Wonder Woman?
You can expect a few connections to the larger DCU in Season 2, particularly via the Quantum Unfolding Chamber seen in the first season. “The QUC is the center of the story in Peacemaker Season 2,” Gunn said – this could be how Peacemaker interacts with another version of himself in the trailer.
“I developed it along the way, in conjunction with the other DC projects that we’re doing, so it’s very much connected to Superman and it’s very much connected to what comes after,” Gunn added.
“I had a rough idea of what I was going to do, but it was actually quite different than what the show ended up being.
“It’s all about the twists and turns. It’s about the surprises that we find out in episode 1, it’s about the surprises we find out in [episodes] 6 and 8. And it’s a very, very emotional season – there’s a lot of comedy like the first season, but there’s also a lot of emotion in it, and it’s really good.”
