Following the death of Dawson’s Creek star James Van Der Beek, a GoFundMe that was set up in his name raised $1 million dollars in just 24 hours, and is well on the way to smashing its current $1.5 million target.
Following a battle with colorectal cancer, James Van Der Beek died yesterday (February 11) at the age of 48.
The actor was best known for playing the titular Dawson Leery in Dawson’s Creek, as well as starring in movies Varsity Blue, Texas Rangers, and The Rules of Attraction, and TV shows Pose, CSI Cyber, and Don’t Trust the B**** in Apartment 23.
Following his death, a GoFundMe was created that’s well on the way to surpassing its new target.
GoFundMe created to support James Van Der Beek’s family
In spite of being a hugely successful actor who was still working on major projects like the forthcoming Legally Blond prequel, the cost of James Van Der Beek’s medical care decimated his savings, leaving his family needing financial support.
A GoFundMe was therefore set up for his wife Kimberly, and their six children, with the description stating:
“James Van Der Beek was a beloved husband, father, and friend who touched the lives of everyone around him. After a long and courageous battle with cancer, James passed away on February 11, 2026 leaving behind his devoted wife, Kimberly, and their six wonderful children.
“Throughout his illness, the family faced not only emotional challenges but also significant financial strain as they did everything possible to support James and provide for his care.
“In the wake of this loss, Kimberly and the children are facing an uncertain future. The costs of James’s medical care and the extended fight against cancer have left the family out of funds.
“They are working hard to stay in their home and to ensure the children can continue their education and maintain some stability during this incredibly difficult time. The support of friends, family, and the wider community will make a world of difference as they navigate the road ahead.
“Your generosity will help cover essential living expenses, pay bills, and support the children’s education. Every donation, no matter the size, will help Kimberly and her family find hope and security as they rebuild their lives. Thank you for considering a gift to support them.”
Earlier today (February 12) the GoFundMe target was $1.3m, but the page easily surpassed that, and that target has now risen to $1.5m, while at the time of writing, nearly 30k people have contributed.
