Jennifer Lawrence has revealed that her relationship with dogs has changed dramatically after one bit her young son, leading her to make a remark about wanting to “obliterate every dog.”
Speaking during a conversation event at the 92nd Street Y in New York City on January 7, following a screening of her upcoming film Die, My Love, the Oscar-winning actress explained how becoming a parent reshaped how she views animals, particularly dogs.
Lawrence, 35, said she decided to give her dog Princess Pippi Longstocking, whom she adopted in 2017, to her parents after welcoming children. She shares two sons, including three-year-old Cy, with her husband Cooke Maroney.
“I just see them as a threat”
“Dogs became so scary” to her after entering motherhood, Lawrence said, explaining that she now instinctively sees them as threats. “It’s almost like I don’t recognize dogs right now, like I just see them as a threat,” she told the audience.
The actress then described the incident that prompted her reaction, saying one dog bit her son. Reflecting on her emotional response at the time, Lawrence said it made her want to “obliterate every dog,” before launching into an exaggerated and graphic rant meant for comedic effect.
The comments drew laughter from the crowd, though the language was intentionally extreme.
Lawrence clarified that the experience pushed her away from owning dogs altogether. She said she is no longer willing to risk having another dog in her home and has instead become a committed cat owner. She now has a cat named Fred, whom she described as having a sharp and amusing personality.
“They’re so misunderstood,” Lawrence said of cats, adding that their aloof behavior is what she finds funny. She joked that Fred often enters a room in a way that makes it seem like a coincidence he is there at all.
