Jim Carrey is reportedly in talks to star in Warner Bros.’ live-action movie adaptation of the 1960s animated TV series The Jetsons, which Jurassic World’s Colin Trevorrow is in line to direct.

The Wrap reports that Trevorrow will also co-write the screenplay with Joe Epstein (The Idol).

A sci-fi counterpart to another Hanna-Barbera production, The Flintstones, The Jetsons aired for three seasons (a total of 75 episodes) on ABC from 1962-63. The show was set in a future where flying cars, moving sidewalks, and robots were the norm.

The animated sitcom followed George Jetson (the role Carrey will play), an employee at Spacely's Space Sprockets who resides in Orbit City with his wife Jane, kids Judy and Elroy, dog Astro, and their sarcastic robot maid Rosie.

Hollywood has been trying to adapt The Jetsons as a live-action movie since the 1980s with Paramount, Universal, and Warner Bros. all taking a crack at the project at various points.

Talents who have been attached to various past incarnations include producer Denise Di Novi (Batman Returns), director Rob Minkoff (The Lion King, Stuart Little), director Adam Shankman (Bringing Down the House), writer Adam F. Goldberg (The Goldbergs), director Robert Rodriguez (Spy Kids), and writers Van Robichaux and Evan Susser (Brooklyn Nine-Nine).

Short Circuit’s Matt Lieberman was hired to script an unproduced Jetsons animated movie for Warner Bros. back in 2015, a project which at one point had Conrad Vernon (Shrek 2, Sausage Party) attached to direct.

Back to the Future director Robert Zemeckis was attached to executive produce a live-action ABC sitcom of The Jetsons back in 2017, but that project never panned out.

The last time the beloved cartoon graced the silver screen was in 1990’s Jetsons: The Movie, an animated feature film directed by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera.
