More than 50 million pounds of Jimmy Dean and State Fair frozen products have been recalled nationwide after complaints that the items may contain pieces of wood.
The voluntary recall was announced on September 27 by Hillshire Brands Company, a subsidiary of Tyson Foods, according to a notice from the U.S. Food Safety and Inspection Service. The recall impacts more than two dozen products, including State Fair corn dogs and Jimmy Dean pancake and sausage sticks, products that are intended to have wood in them.
The recall effects food produced between March 17 and September 26.
Tyson Foods said in a statement that the recall was issued “out of an abundance of caution” and stressed that no other Jimmy Dean or State Fair products are affected. The company confirmed that the frozen items were sold online, at retailers nationwide, in schools, food service locations, and even Department of Defense facilities.
Five injuries reported from contaminated corn dogs and food products
According to federal officials, the affected products may contain small wood fragments that became embedded in the batter during production. Hillshire Brands received multiple consumer complaints and confirmed at least five injuries linked to the recalled products.
The recalled items can be identified by establishment numbers “EST-582” or “P-894” printed on packaging, along with specific use by or sell by dates. A full list of products is available through the USDA’s official recall notice.
Consumers are urged not to eat the affected products and to either throw them away or return them to the place of purchase. Anyone concerned about injury should seek medical attention.
