Despite being a key figure in the jujutsu world, Master Tengen finally steps out of the shadows in Jujutsu Kaisen Season 3. Long teased but rarely seen, the immortal sorcerer’s role shifts from background lore to something far more immediate.
Tengen was first mentioned early on by Megumi and played a passive but pivotal role during the Hidden Inventory Arc, where their planned merger with Riko Amanai set off a chain of events that reshaped several characters’ fates, including Gojo’s.
Their first active appearance comes in the Perfect Preparation Arc, when Yuji and his allies seek answers about the Prison Realm and the true purpose of the Culling Game. From here on out, spoilers follow.
Master Tengen’s role in Jujutsu Kaisen Season 3
Master Tengen is an immortal jujutsu sorcerer who drops one of Season 3’s biggest revelations and exposes the true identity of Kenjaku.
A rare existence even among sorcerers, Tengen has lived for centuries and protects the jujutsu high schools using an immensely powerful barrier technique. Long before cursed spirits ruled the shadows, Tengen was once a young girl who preached Buddhism across Japan, teachings that later became the foundation of modern jujutsu sorcery.
Though they usually remain secluded within the Tombs of the Star Corridor, Tengen becomes a central chess piece once Kenjaku’s plan begins to unfold. When Yuji’s group questions the motive behind the Culling Game, Tengen reveals its true purpose: to amass cursed energy on a massive scale, which allows Kenjaku to merge with the immortal sorcerer and rewrite the rules of the jujutsu world itself.
After explaining the rules of the deadly game, Tengen is confronted directly by Kenjaku. Despite Yuki and Choso’s attempts to protect them, the fight ends decisively, with Tengen defeated and their true body taken over by the curse user.
Jujutsu Kaisen Season 3 is currently streaming on Crunchyroll, with the first two episodes already available. New episodes release weekly every Thursday at 9am PT.
