During a conversation about Sacha Baron Coen’s Mephisto, Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige says the character’s “potential is clear.”

Created by Stan Lee and John Buscema, and premiering in the pages of Silver Surfer #3 in December 1968, Mephisto is a powerful demon who rules over a hell-like dimension.

Inspired by the Faust legend, he deals in temptation, deception, and manipulation, serving as a super-villain to the likes of Spider-Man, Ghost Rider, and Doctor Strange.

The character was rumored to be debuting in WandaVision, but following mention in Agatha All Along, his first onscreen appearance came in Ironheart, where Mephisto was played by Sacha Baron Coen. According to Marvel‘s head honcho, that’s just the beginning…

Kevin Feige says Mephisto’s “potential is clear”

Fans were disappointed when Mephisto didn’t appear in WandaVision, but Kevin Feige said during a recent press conference: “He was never part of WandaVision. We’ve talked about that.

“[Director] Matt [Shakman]’s talked about that. [Creator] Jac Schaefer’s talked about that. He was never part of WandaVision. But the enthusiasm with which he was theorized on that was certainly cool and fun to watch.

“He’s another character that, pre-MCU, would have been hard to do. He’s a devil. How do you do that character? But he’s a formative character. He was a big part of Thanos’ storyline in the comics. So again, now that he’s here, the potential is clear.”

When asked if the studio plans to “use more” of Mephisto in the future, Feige simply said “Yes.”

That could be happening sooner rather than later, as Marvel is rumored to be adapting a big Mephisto storyline in the near future.
