Hulu is bringing King of the Hill to life at San Diego Comic-Con with a full-scale Arlen experience, including Hank Hill’s backyard, but there’s no propane or propane accessories in sight.
Starting July 24 outside the SDCC Convention Center, fans can visit a pop-up recreation of Arlen, Texas, to celebrate the show’s highly anticipated revival with aged-up characters from when the series first ended.
The event features iconic set pieces and interactive attractions from the beloved animated series, and it all sounds pretty cool, I tell you hwhat. Albeit minus tanks of sweet lady propane.
SDCC gets a real-life King of the Hill event
The event, dubbed Hank Hill’s Backyard, will let fans pose on the front lawn with 2D cutouts of the Hill family, hop on the Hill family lawn mower, and even take a “drive” through Arlen.
Over at Mega Lo Mart, guests can customize trucker hats with limited-edition King of the Hill patches, unique to the event. There’s also a Water Tower station handing out cold, Alamo-branded cans of water, a collector’s item for die-hard fans.
And yes, there’s a backyard BBQ station too, serving up Texas-style bites all day long. But here’s the kicker: we can confirm that there will not be a propane grill on site. Instead, a massive grill setup will loop clips from both the classic show and the upcoming revival.
No official reason has been given for the propane ban, but given what happened with the infamous Mega Lo Mart explosion in Season 2, it’s probably better to be safe than sorry.
For those not attending SDCC, there’s still something to raise a can to: the revival will launch alongside a real-world King of the Hill beer. Alamo Beer Company in San Antonio has partnered with Hulu to brew a branded version of Alamo beer, just like the one the guys sip in the alley.
