Jon Snow actor Kit Harrington was furious as viral fan petitions demanded the final season of Game of Thrones to be remade. “How dare you?” he said.
It’s no secret the conclusion to HBO’s Game of Thrones wasn’t everyone’s cup of tea. What was once a cultural juggernaut, a show you couldn’t not hear about, fizzled out fast as a result of its controversial final season.
Season 8, which ran in early 2019, was heavily criticized for its pacing, along with its narrative choices in the climactic moments – not to mention some obvious blunders like the infamous Starbucks cameo.
Some frustrated viewers went a bit further than merely voicing their displeasure online, however. A petition demanded the final act be remade with “competent writers.” To date, it has gathered over 1.8 million signatures, and it made one of the show’s main stars absolutely furious.

“That genuinely angered me,” Harrington said in a 2026 feature with the New York Times. “Like, how dare you? Sorry, that’s just how I feel.
“I think it was a level of idiocy that can only come about through social media.”
Highlighting the immense efforts of the cast and crew, Harrington found himself dumbfounded seeing some of the early negativity around Season 8. At this time, the English actor had just left rehab, and thought everyone involved had given it their all, especially regarding one particular battle that took 55 consecutive days to film.
The Season 8 finale itself is the lowest-rated episode of Game of Thrones on IMDB, sitting at 4/10 from 280,000 user reviews.
Previously, Harrington argued the story couldn’t have been stretched any further due to the crew all being “so f***ing tired. We couldn’t have gone longer.”
While he agreed “there were some mistakes made, story-wise, some interesting choices that didn’t quite work,” he argued “there was [no] alternative. I didn’t have another season in me.”
