A rental listing in Canada is going viral for all the wrong reasons after a landlord tried charging $650 a month for what is essentially a tent in a basement with no bathroom.
The listing, posted on Facebook Marketplace in Peterborough, Ontario, advertised a “furnished” basement apartment. At first glance, it sounded like a rare deal in a brutal housing market.
The so-called apartment is an unfinished, dim basement straight out of The Silence of the Lambs. There’s an old couch, a dusty TV, and the “bedroom” is literally a camping tent set up in the corner. The listing also confirms there is no washroom and no kitchen.
It gets worse. The poster notes that “3 girls as a neighbours” live there too, hinting the room might even be shared. Pets are allowed, though, which is a good thing, because living there would probably require an emotional support animal.
Internet baffled by tent rental in scary basement
Social media tore the listing apart before it was removed.
“Gotta hold it in until the lease is done, sorry,” one user joked after noticing the lack of a bathroom.
“Rent it for a month, use the bathroom on the floor, peace out,” another said.
Others pointed out that the unit appears to violate multiple housing rules. “It’s absolutely illegal. It’s a cold, dim dungeon with no windows or access to water,” one commenter blasted.
Many remarked with how the room reminded them of Buffalo Bill’s house from The Silence of the Lambs.
“It rubs the lotion on its skin, or else it gets the hose again!” users quoted.
Canada’s rental market has produced plenty of shocking listings, but this one ranks near the top. In 2023, a Toronto realtor went viral after exposing a $900-a-month ad where a woman wanted a tenant to sleep in the same bed as her.
