With Season 2 of Landman about to drop, stars Billy Bob Thornton and Sam Elliott have been weighing in on co-creator Taylor Sheridan’s upcoming departure from Paramount.

As the brains behind shows like Yellowstone, 1883, 1923, Mayor of Kingstown, Tulsa King, Lioness, and Landman, Taylor Sheridan is the backbone of the Paramount network.

So it came as a shock when news emerged that Sheridan would be leaving his TV home for NBCUniversal in 2029, prompting questions about what that would mean for his hugely successful TV empire.

With Landman returning this Sunday (November 16) to Paramount+, the stars of that show have been sharing their thoughts about his forthcoming absence.

Landman’s Billy Bob Thornton addresses Taylor Sheridan departure

Billy Bob Thornton plays oil crisis manager – and Landman protagonist – Tommy Norris in the show, and when asked about Taylor Sheridan’s departure at the Season 2 Episode 1 premiere, he said he isn’t worried.

“I think the shows that are at Paramount, stay at Paramount, so I don’t think those are affected,” Thornton told The Hollywood Reporter. “His deal is for the future. And who knows what that holds. Taylor is a brilliant guy, and I’m sure wherever he goes, whatever he does is gonna be successful. At least I know it’ll be real.”

Sam Elliott joins Landman as Tommy’s father in Season 2, and he was similarly relaxed about what’s ahead, telling THR: “It’s not gonna impact the future of this series because everything that Taylor had at Paramount is gonna stay at Paramount. It’s not like he’s taking it there.”

He then wished Sheridan well, adding: “The Universal thing, as I understand, it’s a whole new deal, so it’s just great for Taylor’s world. I think it’s fantastic.”

Landman star believes series “could go on and on”

Looking to the future of Landman, Michelle Randolph – who plays Tommy’s daughter Ainsley – believes there’s much more material to mine.

“There’s so many stories to tell,” Rudolph told THR at the same red carpet event. “There’s so many really distinct characters, I feel like we could go on and on and on because what I always have to remind myself – the first season was 10 days in the show so I’m like, we could film the show for so long because it’s not like it’s one season, taking place over a year or anything.

“There’s so much room for growth in every single character – they’re all deeply flawed in their own ways, which is what makes them really enticing to watch because it’s very human.”
