When Divinity was announced during The Game Awards, it’s safe to say there was a lot of hype. Following on from the huge success of Baldur’s Gate 3, it’s easy to see why fans are excited to dive back into Larian’s own IP once again. However, if you’re planning on replaying the games before release, you may want to think again.

The Divinity series is perhaps Larian’s most successful original IP. Baldur’s Gate 3 really made a name for the studio, but they were hardly small developers before then, thanks to Divinity. This series takes you through gripping stories, a beautiful setting (very similar to DnD’s world), and its own battle style, also reminiscent of BG3.

So, when Divinity was announced during The Game Awards, the hype was immense, even following a few AI mentions and an upcoming AMA to shut down any frustrations. However, as it goes with many new additions to a franchise, fans are already looking to play the six main Divinity games that came before, but the Larian CEO is calling for players to only focus on a few.

Larian CEO reveals two games you should play before Divinity

Speaking to GamesRadar, Larian CEO Swen Vinke explained that the best games to play in preparation for the new Divinity are the Original Sin Games.

“If you play [the Divinity: Original Sin games], you will see things in this Divinity that reference those two,” he revealed, going on to add, “If you played the first Divinity, you will see it referenced properly inside of this Divinity. Ego Draconis, same story, or The Dragon Knight Saga, all of it is being referenced, but it’s just part of the history of what happened in this world, and it helped shape the world to the point where it is now.”

So, there’s an opportunity to really delve into the immense lore in Divinity’s world, so you can potentially spot easter eggs, references, and understand the politics and history before diving into the new game.

He also explained that there are a few games you just don’t need to worry about unless you’re a diehard fan looking to know absolutely everything: “If you really want to know everything, there are games that came before [Original Sin],” Vincke said. “But they’re a bit outdated by now, they are quite old.”

So, if you want to get fully immersed in the world of Divinity before it releases, play Original Sin 1 and 2, and only dive into the early games if you really want to learn everything.
