Magic: The Gathering‘s Principal Designer Gavin Verhey is no stranger to helming video game crossovers, and he’s eager to see more in the future, with Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 topping his wishlist.

From Fallout to the record-breaking success of the Final Fantasy crossover, MTG has been partnering with a number of popular video game franchises of late. Universes Beyond allows for collaborations with IP from all across the entertainment spectrum, but there’s one particular property in the crosshairs.

One of 2025’s biggest success stories, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is barreling toward countless Game of the Year nominations. However, if Verhey has his way, it could also be barreling toward its own MTG set.

Gavin Verhey reveals his dream MTG Universes Beyond collab

Magic: The Gathering Final Fantasy is one of the proudest achievements of Gavin’s development career, and with good reason. It is the TCG’s fastest and best-selling set in its 32-year run, and it took an insane amount of work to make that happen.

“When I look at a card in the Final Fantasy set, I see the hours and the days and every discussion, every change, and every mana cost flip that went into it,” he explained. “I could sit here and probably tell you a half-hour story about every single Magic card in that set because it took so much so much of my life to be able to build that thing.”

“It was a gargantuan task taking 16 Final Fantasy games, which are games that you know have 40-plus hours of gameplay in many cases, and distilling that down into one set and making it feel somewhat cohesive.”

In keeping with the theme of video game-related MTG sets, we asked Gavin if he had a particular property that he hoped to make a Universes Beyond set for. His answer: Game of the Year frontrunner; Clair Obscur: Expedition 33.

“I mean, it’s the talk of the town this year right? Expedition 33 would be really fun to get to do,” he said before tempering our expectations. “Who knows if it’ll happen or if they’re even up for that kind of thing, right?”

Verhey then cited his reasons for picking a video game and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 specifically.

“My general theory recently is that gaming brands are just really good collaborations for Magic. When you bring someone new in with a gaming collaboration, they’re already gamers. You don’t have to explain what hit points are, what an objective is, or what mana is. They just get it.

“I think there’s a lot of potential there, and I hope we do more in the future. We’ve already seen Fallout, we’ve seen Warhammer, and hopefully, we’ll have some more good ones on the horizon.”
