Legendary racehorse & Umamusume icon Grass Wonder dies at 30

Grass Wonder, the celebrated Japanese racehorse and popular Umamusume: Pretty Derby character, has died at the age of 30. 

The iconic Japanese racehorse’s death was confirmed in an official statement on August 8, which revealed he died from multiple organ failures linked to his age.

Undefeated from his debut, Grass Wonder became a star of the late 1990s racing scene. He won the Asahi Hai Futurity Stakes in record time and went on to claim three consecutive Grand Prix titles, a feat that cemented his place in Japanese racing history.

As a breeding stallion, he sired multiple G1 winners, including Screen Hero, whose own offspring includes champion stallion Maurice.

Grass Wonder turned 30 this year and was reportedly in good health until his condition deteriorated on the evening before his death. He passed peacefully the following day.

In Umamusume: Pretty Derby, Grass Wonder’s legacy lives on as a graceful, soft-spoken character inspired by the real-world champion’s racing career. The official statement concluded with condolences and recognition of Grass Wonder’s “great contribution to Japanese horse racing,” adding, “We pray for the repose of Grass Wonder’s soul. Rest in peace.”
