Liverpool forward Diogo Jota has died in a car crash in Spain. He was 28 years old.

Jota was travelling with his younger brother, André Silva, when their car left the road and caught fire. Both men were killed in the accident, which occurred around 00:30 local time on Thursday in Zamora, Spain.

Spanish authorities said the Lamborghini they were driving suffered a tyre blow-out while overtaking another vehicle, according to the BBC.

Silva, 26, was also a professional footballer, playing for Portuguese second-division side Penafiel.

Jota had only recently married his long-term partner Rute Cardoso, with whom he shared three children. The couple wed on June 22, and he had posted photos of their ceremony just days before the crash.

The Portuguese international was a key part of Liverpool’s squad since joining the club from Wolves in 2020. He scored over 50 goals for the Reds and played a vital role in their 2024/25 Premier League title win.

He also featured regularly for Portugal, scoring in their UEFA Nations League final victory over Spain earlier this summer.

Before his time at Liverpool, Jota played for Paços de Ferreira, Atlético Madrid, FC Porto and Wolverhampton Wanderers. Known for his sharp movement, clinical finishing and relentless work rate, he earned a reputation as one of Europe’s most intelligent attacking players.
