Chess legend Magnus Carlsen and his wife Ella welcomed their first child, and players across the world think the newborn is a guaranteed prodigy.
On September 30, Ella posted an Instagram story showing Team Liquid‘s Magnus asleep next to his new baby and the date 27.09.2025.
While the internet knew the two were expecting, this was the first time the couple publicly revealed their child. Although it’s not known yet if it’s a boy or a girl, Ella posted a blue heart over the baby’s face. Blue is traditionally associated with boys at birth.
News of the world’s latest Carlsen spread across the web, with fans congratulating the pair on becoming parents while suspecting that this youngster will be a future chess icon like their dad.

In comments on Chess.com and Magnus Carlsen’s X accounts, fans constantly joked about the baby’s hidden talents, as if they were Broly from Dragon Ball.
“Another chess prodigy has arrived,” one commented.
“Kid’s gonna become a GM before Levy,” one remarked, teasing YouTuber GothamChess.
Levy wasn’t the only one catching strays. “GM Hikaru’s new rival just dropped,” mocking Twitch star Hikaru Nakamura.
Many others referred to the baby as a future “GOAT” just like how their father is considered to be the greatest chess player of all time.
For now, though, expect Magnus to adapt to fatherhood. It may be a while yet before we see the young Carlsen at an actual tournament, if they even decide to compete in chess at all.
