One man’s quest for Nintendo Switch games has landed him behind bars after allegedly stealing roughly $10,000 worth of games from local libraries.
An Oakland man was arrested on June 17, 2025, accused of stealing nearly $10,000 worth of Nintendo Switch games from public libraries in Marin County, California. The Marin County Sheriff’s Office shared the news on Facebook, saying that the burglaries took place across at least seven library branches between April and June.
Authorities believe the man specifically targeted locations for their Nintendo Switch game collections. He’s now facing 12 felony charges, including multiple counts of burglary and committing a felony while out on bail.
Man steals hundreds of games from local libraries
While libraries might not be the first place most gamers look for new releases, many branches now offer a curated selection of video games to attract younger visitors. The release of the Switch 2 only heightens the libraries as a prime target, with the consoles seeing a huge rise in popularity, though it has not been made clear whether any of these were Switch 2 games.
The Sheriff’s Office shared a statement about the arrest on Facebook, explaining that “our libraries are pillars of the community and must be safeguarded for everyone to enjoy.”
The exact games stolen haven’t been revealed, but the $10,000 estimate suggests a sizable haul. With Switch games typically priced between $40 and $60, that could mean well over 150 titles were taken.
So far, it’s unclear how the man planned to use or sell the games, and investigators haven’t confirmed whether any of them have been recovered.
