A man who reportedly forced his way through a security door in an airport has died after he was pulled into an aircraft’s engine.

July 8, 2025, marked the day when tourists at the Milan Bergamo Airport in Italy witnessed a horrifying incident of a man getting sucked into an airplane engine.

According to reports, 35-year-old Andrea Russo, resident of Calcinate County in Bergamo, wasn’t a passenger on any flight that day, nor were they an airport employee.

However, they somehow managed to evade security checks and reached the tarmac nonetheless. Authorities had tried to pursue him after spotting him trespassing, but they were unable to stop the man from reaching a moving plane, a fatal move that led to a brutal death.

Before the incident, the man was reported to have entered the airport by car, though he was driving the wrong way. He then abandoned his vehicle and sprinted across the runway after forcing his way through a security door while being chased by the police, all according to eyewitness accounts.

The door in question directly led to the aircraft parking area. As the Volotea Airbus A319 was performing its “pushback maneuver” and was “already on the move” to prepare to depart for Asturias, Spain, witnesses said that he got close to the aircraft and was pulled into its engine.

“At first, he threw himself against the casings – the protections of the right engine of the plane,” claimed a witness.

“Then he went around and either threw himself or was sucked into the propeller of the left engine. We were trying to go up the stairs and we saw everything,” they added.

Volotea posted an announcement on X, sending their deep condolences to the man’s family.

Additionally, as a result of this incident, multiple flights into the airport had to be diverted to another location, while some were even canceled.

According to The Sun, based on the information from Italian outlet La voce del Patriota, the “most accredited hypothesis, although still under consideration,” behind this man’s actions is that it was a “premeditated suicide.”

Police said that Russo had previously struggled with drug addiction and was admitted to a recovery center in the past.
