An Instagram scientist has gone viral after creating a rather heavy phone case that means he stops scrolling aimlessly.

For years, smartphone users have been trying to find creative solutions to cut down their screen time, especially as phones have started doing weekly reviews on app usage and screen time.

There have been plenty of apps that require you to complete a task to be able to use a phone for a certain period of time, and plenty of phones now come with built-in features that will let you lock yourself out of apps when you’ve used them for too long.

However, content creator Logan Ivey has taken things up a level with his idea – a 3-D printed phone case that weighs six pounds and requires special screws to take it apart. Seriously.

6lb iPhone case cuts screen time by more than half

Ivey, who runs the matterneuroscience account on Instagram, showed off his weighty creation on October 13. “The idea is that the phone would be so heavy that it would make it physically harder to scroll, and physically harder to take it with me everywhere I go,” he noted.

The six-pound case needs to be screwed on and off using a set of allen keys, which is a time-consuming process. However, since using it, Ivey has seen his screen time usage drop from an average of six hours to around two hours.

“I no longer take my phone everywhere with me, and when I do have it on me, I often scroll less because it is physically harder to do,” he said.

Ivey’s post has racked up close to 500,000 likes from viewers who are interested in funding the project’s Kickstarter campaign. “I’d buy this,” one commented. “Does it carry iPhone 17 Pro Max? Asking for a friend,” another said.

Yet, not everyone is sold on the idea. “Don’t think it will solve the addiction,” one said. “Take control of your phone, and your phone won’t control you. This is what I’ve done. But if you want a brick, get a brick,” another said.
