A man from Los Angeles has been jailed after he decided to feed a cocktail to a hawk and film it for YouTube.

Pet owners are well aware that, sometimes, you give your pet a treat that they probably shouldn’t have. Dogs aren’t supposed to eat chocolate, but they’ll sneak one from you every now and again.

When it comes to wild animals, feeding them might land you with an unexpected pet. However, there are plenty of warnings about not doing so and just leaving them alone.

In the case of Cesar Gustavo Diaz, he opted to feed a BuzzBall cocktail to a wild hawk, and it’s now landed him with jail time.

Man sentenced to 45 days in jail over hawk cocktail video

As per the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, Diaz, a convicted felon, was sentenced to 45 days in Los Angeles County Jail after his video went viral.

“Cooper’s hawks are protected under California and federal law. CDFW reminds the public that capturing, harming or harassing wildlife is illegal and can result in criminal charges,” they said in a statement posted on Facebook on February 24.

The Department of Fish and Wildlife also noted that Diaz had released the hawk before officials could intervene, so its condition is unknown.

As well as the jail time, the convicted felon is required to perform 20 days of community labor, complete a 24-session animal cruelty counseling program, a five-year prohibition on possessing animals, a ten-year firearm prohibition, and pay $220 in fines and fees.

“Hope the immature Cooper’s Hawk survived its ordeal,” one Facebook commenter said. “Is the hawk okay? It was obviously in distress to allow a human to prod at it like that” another asked. “This bird looks disoriented. Wonder how he captured it,” another chimed in.
